Simple things to teach your kids

As I look around my town of Des Moines, I have to wonder if parents are so busy making sure that their kids are taught to be politically correct that they are neglecting a few other things that parents are supposed to teach their children:

1. "Zip up your jacket--it's cold outside."

2. "No flipflops! It's winter!"

3. "Where's your hat--Don't you know your body heat rises right out the top of your head?"

4. "You are 13--No you may not go out unchaperoned."

5. "The first dent that goes on that car, you start work to pay the insurance premiums."

6. "No, I will not pay you to take out the trash, unless you want to start paying $5 for each meal that you consume on these premises."

7. "There are only seven days in a week--so you cannot participate in eight sports and clubs."

8. "Whining in the toy department will not result in new goodies."

9. "A candy bar and a Coke do not constitute "breakfast".

10. "Because I'm your MOM, that's why."

We are not opposed to healthcare reform!

Have you noticed that the majority of newspaper articles and other media reports refer to Republicans in Congress, and those of us out in the real world, who are opposed to the current healthcare plan on Capitol Hill, as "opposed to reform".  That's so biased! In order to be "for" reform, according to the mainstream media Obama pushers, we must be for the current disaster being proposed by Congress. Their attitude is that "If you disagree with us, you are wrong--and perhaps even evil."

NOT TRUE! I don't  know anyone who is opposed to reforming our healthcare system, but what Congress is proposing riles me for several reasons:

First, you don't need to toss out the entire system in order to make it better;

Second, please tell me even one time that the government has promised to do something better and cheaper and succeeded in delivering on their claim;

Third, tell me the details!The current proposal has darn few of them, and almost none of the members of either house of Congress has even read this thing. Don't give me generalities when you're talking about cutting MY healthcare. I want to know what you're going to allow and what you are not;

Fourth, don't try to slide by me by saying that this thing isn't going to cost me big time in taxes and fees--be specific!;

Fifth, remember when the 55MPH speed limit was imposed, but states could opt out? They could, but lost all Federal funding for their highways. The latest out of Washington is that states can opt out of the Public Option in the healthcare plan--but of course they will still have to pay for it. That, folks, is not giving states a choice!

I am for reforming our healthcare system, but socialized medicine is not the answer. Congress, and you too Mr.President, need to get back to the table, open the door to all opinions, and come up with something a lot better, a lot simpler, and a lot more understandable.

The First Amendment Supports Religion in America

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says about religion: "CONGRESS shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF..." (Caps mine).  CONGRESS cannot pass a law legalizing only one religion. It has nothing to do with individuals putting a Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any religious  decoration on public or private property; it does not mean that teachers may not lay a Bible on their desk, etc.  It means that CONGRESS cannot pass a law barring all but one faith. 

The persecution of religion in this country, based on totally biased interpretations of the First Amendment is very real;  especially toward Christianity--the faith taking the biggest hit at this time. When are we going to stand up and start speaking out against this misapplication of the First Amendment? When are we going to tell our schools and businesses to learn what the rights of their students and employees really are and then stand by them?
